Faceted stones? Well, I love green so I couldn't resist! These tend to misbehave a bit, so that's a plus too. They're hung on rings so they wiggle around as you move and pick up the light from every angle. The tiny beads in the necklace are all tourmalines also. According to the Peterson Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals (see below), tourmaline is a mineral of high temperatures and pressures, forming in igneous and metamorphic rocks and best developed in granitic pegmatites. That probably explains why my home town is noted for its spectacular tourmalines. In fact, these stones could have been mined practically next door at the world famous Pala Mine of San Diego County.

We noted that tourmaline is a mineral. Have you ever wondered about the difference between minerals and rocks, and what a stone is? Technically, a mineral is a solid, homogeneous, inorganic substance which occurs in nature and which has a definite chemical composition. This composition can be simple, like diamond (C) or more complex like green tourmaline ( NaMg3B3Al3(Al3Si6O27)(OH)4). Tourmaline is considered a mineral group insofar as different colors have different compositions. Some of the fancy colors have different names, but in the gem trade, "tourmaline" usually refers to green stones like these. A rock is an aggregate of minerals. A stone can be a little piece of rock or of mineral.

I get carried away by exotic themes, perhaps you have noticed. Johari (below) gives instructions for making a talisman of green tourmaline (or emerald, etc.), associated with the planet Mercury. The talisman is said to bring wisdom, peace, happiness, strength, etc. Such a talisman requires a minimum weight of 3 carats (these stones would have been perfect), the shape should be circular or oval and have a bow and arrow design on the front. The back should have a yantra engraved in the silver, white gold or platinum setting. The yantra consists of a square divided into nine smaller squares (3 x 3) with the numbers (read left to right, top to bottom): 9, 4, 11, 10, 8, 6, 5, 12,7. The mantra "Aum bum budhaye [more often transliterated budhaya] namah aum" should be repeated 4,000 times. The subject of mantras is very deep, I would not presume to offer any discussion of them. You can google this mantra and find it generally associated with emerald and used in various contexts.

If you've read this far, perhaps you won't mind a teensy advertisement? This is a very pretty, very delicate little necklace! I do hope you will buy it today and wear it joyfully!
