The artist told me this was "pudding stone." When I looked baffled, he said that's what he calls anything he doesn't have a name for. Nobody can believe the finish on this pendant. It isn't shiny, and it isn't matte like the big fancy jasper beads in the necklace. It is velvety. How can you make a rock feel like velvet? I have no idea, he's a genius. Everyone wants to touch it, they can't help themselves. The pattern in it looked like a nebula to me. The overall effect of this piece is extremely soft and the colors are neutral but very interesting. The 4mm beads are Botswana agate (I've also seen it called Boswana agate). Many have tiny bands of color and are very beautiful. The star of the bead portion of our show is the faceted chalcedony. I kept looking at these beads, thinking I would have thrown the rough aside. Yet whoever chose this material and fraceted it so beautifully was brilliant! The facets open up windows into the mysterious worlds within the material. Really simple necklaces like this are so hard to make! I made this one, took photos, was so happy with it... until I wore it to make sure it worked. It didn't. The pendant just didn't want to behave. So I took it apart. It is very difficult to take my stuff apart because it is all knotted. This is the trouble with one-of-a-kind pieces-- you're always trying to work out innumerable details. For example, this pendant has a huge hole in the top, so I had to figure out an attachment that would look nice and make it hang properly. Took two tries. I'm glad it didn't take ten!!! |
