A "wooly bear" might sound a little scary, but this smiling bear is actually quite cuddly. His fur is deeply carved and he has cheery blue turquoise eyes. I thought his necklace should have coral colors, but that was out of the question as far as he was concerned, so turquoise it is! The small turquoise beads are beautifully polished natural stones. The Madagascar jet beads have the same soft luster that the bear does, there are a few black onyx beads to give it a little sparkle.

Long time readers of Virgo Moon discussions will ask, where's lunch?? He has escargot for lunch. The little snail shell has beautiful delicately-traced designs. Remind me to look up the name of the shell when I find my shell book!

Shall I tell you something about making a piece like this? First you have to figure out what the bear likes, in this case it wasn't hard, he is a person with strong opinions. Then you have to string the beads. The outer strand is strung on cable for strength. You would think this would be easy-- string a few beads and be done with it. But finding a tiny black hole on a perfectly round matte black bead is much easier said than done. The holes in these beautifully made beads are much smaller than those in the tiny 15/o seed beads used in the tassel, plus the holes have the same color and finish as the beads! The other two strands are hand-knotted silk. Of course you have to string each strand on monofilament first to be sure of the placement of the beads, but you can only guess at the length since the knots add just a bit of length. Adding to the difficulty are the beads themselves which have tiny, pleasing differences in size and shape, the difference between hand-cut and machine cut is evident when you work with them. The handmade beads are very lovable, but can be little rascals when you want them to sit in a particular spot. Since you have to start at one end when you knot the strand, you have to make a leap of faith that everything will be in the right position at the end! I hope you will agree the beads are properly arranged and give the little bear a home!

LOVE BEADS: This piece includes "love beads," beads given to me after the fire by friends and strangers. The necklace carries the energy of their loving concern.
