The cabochon in this little piece is a material called Chinese writing stone because the natural images look something like Chinese characters. I added the characters for 'Peace' (an) on the left, and 'Love' (jen) on the right. The necklace has beautifully carved black onyx, sponge coral and little coral flowers. The small round beads look black, but in fact are rainbow obsidian. They have a soft luster that blends nicely with the charcoal cabochon. Chinese characters often have a wide range of translations into English. The word an can e translated quiet, still, peace and tranquillity. It is radical 40, in Matthews it is #26. Karlgren lists it as #146a, and says the character is a picture of a roof and a woman. The word jen is an amazing word whose meanings include perfect virtue (the ideal of Confucius), benevolence, charity, humanity and love. It is radical 9, #3099 in Matthews. Karlgren lists it as 388f, but unfortunately does not tell us what the picture represents. Somewhere I have notes from about a zillion years ago on a lecture given by Dr. Fingerette on jen. If I find them, I'll update this page. |
